SedationLog

Built by a dentist who got tired of sedation records you couldn't defend

SedationLog is the software a practicing dentist wished they'd had on every sedation case they ever performed. Every flag, every form field, every PDF section is there because it caught something a real workflow would have missed.

The company

SedationLog is a product of Clarity, a small software company started by Michael Schaake -- a practicing dentist who previously built SmileConsult, a HIPAA-compliant consultation platform for general-dentistry referrals.

Clarity exists to build the kind of clinical software that gets built when the engineer and the clinician are the same person. That's a short list of products, and SedationLog is one of them.

Why this product, why now

TODO: Replace this section with the real founding story -- what specific case or audit experience pushed Michael to start building?

Most sedation records in dental practice today are PDFs with fields. They're easy to fill out and easy to fail. The fields don't know about each other; a missing Aldrete and an ASA-4 patient with no medical consult sit on the same page without anyone flagging the combination. The signature is just an image; there's nothing about the file that tells you it hasn't been edited since.

SedationLog flips that model. The record is a structured object that runs through a deterministic rules engine on every state change. The engine knows what a defensible record looks like -- because every rule was written from a specific failure mode in a real case. The signed PDF lands in storage that physically can't be modified for seven years.

What we won't do

  • No AI in v1. The flagging engine is deterministic rules, not ML. A board defense doesn't go better because an LLM classified your record as "low-risk." It goes better because the record is bulletproof.
  • No selling de-identified data. Your sedation records stay yours. We don't sell them, we don't pool them for "industry insights," we don't train models on them.
  • No middleman cloud providers. Everything runs on AWS under our BAA. No third-party HIPAA conduit / sub-processor that we don't have a direct contractual relationship with.

What's coming

TODO: Refresh this roadmap when public launch timing firms up. Keep it loose; don't promise dates.

The arc, in rough order:

  • Multi-monitor support (other Mindray models; eventually Philips, Welch Allyn)
  • Per-tenant rule customization (some practices want a stricter Aldrete threshold)
  • iPad-first chair-side interface
  • Practice-management integrations (Eaglesoft, Dentrix, Open Dental)
  • Multi-location DSO support with consolidated reporting
